Brookings is a town in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,598 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. Brookings was founded in 1881 as a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. The first post office was established in 1882 and the town incorporated in 1889. The name of Brookings comes from Samuel S.
