Billy completed high school at 14 and then entered Lackland AFB where he served as a bombardier on bomber planes from 1943-1945 before transferring to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio where he became an aerial gunner/tactician until his discharge from service in 1946.. The next year he married Betty Jean Laughlin who was also from Spokane County . They moved to Brookings after their marriage and went into business together as an advertising agency.. Billy Mitchell had always loved flying but never thought it would be his career choice because "he didn't think you could make it as an airplane pilot." However, within three years of starting college at Wright Patterson he had become one of America's first operational pilots with Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighters.. He continued his aviation career by becoming wingsman with Republic F-84 Thunderjet fighter jets while stationed at RAF Bentwaters RAF station near London.. Mitchell returnied home following WWII and joined Republic Aviation Corporation as vice president international sales representative for Western Europe before being elected president pro tempore (president emeritus) in 1969….. At age 87 he retired from Republic Aviation Corporation effective February 1st, 1984…. After retiring from Republic Aviation Corp., Mitchell lived full time at his home on Bowen Island….
