There are few gun gift histories in Sumter, South Carolina. The first guns were brought over by the British during the American Revolutionary War. The British wanted to ensure that their soldiers had a way to protect themselves from Indians and other enemies. They also wanted to give some of these weapons to civilians as a form of appreciation for their support of the war. Over time, both the military and civilian firearms have been acquired and used in various ways throughout Sumter County. The first gun that was specifically given as a gift to someone in Sumter County was an 8-shot revolver known as the “Old Hickory” rifle. This weapon was donated by Colonel John Sevier to Major General Andrew Johnson in 1868. Johnson used it during the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1865. After this event, many people in Sumter began wanting one of these rifles for themselves. One such individual is Reverend Drayton Easley who received his first rifle from Major General Robert Easley at Fort Fisher on December 1, 1865. This particular rifle was given as a Christmas present to Easley’s family member, Mrs. Jnoan Henson Pittman Jr., who lived in neighboring Uniontown at that time. It is interesting to note that major general Robert Easley only gave away 7 percent of his total arsenal when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 – which means that almost all of his firearms went into hands of civilians! Additionally, several cannons and rockets were also confiscated after the surrender including three old 12-pounder guns and two 40-millimeter cannons! These weapons would go onto play an important role during Reconstruction in south Carolina after the Civil War ended! In 1903, Reva Culp Wright became interested in acquiring her own firearm because she felt her life would be improved with one (she later became known as “the lady with the GUN”). She enlisted help from her friend Gertrude Langhorne Jameson (known simply as “Gertie”) who helped purchase an Old Model Army Enfield Rifle from Captain William Tilton for Wright on October 4th 1903 (it is possible that this particular gift may have been unique due to its age). With this new firearm, Wright began practicing self-defense within her home using it against potential attackers or muggers who had begun target shooting around town since she no longer needed assistance from police officers outside her home anymore! From here on out, Gertie would become known locally as “the Gun Lady” due to this initial contribution towards gun history in Sumter County!

Sumter is a town in Jasper County, South Carolina. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan statistical area. The town was platted in 1834 by John Sumter and James A. Crain, both natives of Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The name "Sumter" is taken from an Indian word meaning "a small stream." In 1851, Sumter became the county seat of Jasper County after that county was created from parts of Pickens and Laurens counties. In 1874, the state legislature moved the county seat to Greenville due to financial problems with Jasper County. The first post office in Sumter was established on December 4, 1834, by John Sumter and James A. Crain. The first business establishment in town was a store owned by David Payne opened on April 20, 1835. Soon thereafter a schoolhouse and other public buildings were built including a jail (1836), courthouse (1837), market (1839), Grain Elevator (1841), Baptist Church (1846), Methodist Episcopal Church (1848) and sumter cemetery (1910). Held annually since 1903 as the "John A. Crain Centennial Celebration", Sumters celebration features an outdoor parade through downtown followed by an evening concert at Municipal Stadium

Sumter is a town in the Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It was founded as a post office in 1871 and named for General Joseph Easley Sumter. The first store in town was built on present day US-129 by A.J. Kelley and his brother John Farrar Kelley (1853-1936). In 1887, Jesse Ladd became the first black person to serve as Mayor of Sumter when he took office after being elected from an African American district in 1946. He served until his death in 1984. The town developed around two churches: First Baptist Church which served as the town's spiritual center and later West Point Missionary Baptist Church which served as its educational and cultural center. These two churches were joined together to form First African Methodist Episcopal church in 1901 and it remains today the largest denominational African American congregation in America with over 4,000 members. A cotton gin operated by Wm Hargrave & Sons was located just outside of town beginning around 1881 until it closed due to lack of customers in 1915; this gin is now known as "Hargrave's". In 1905 Sumter High School opened attended by black students while white students attended nearby Tuskegee Institute; however this arrangement ended when Tuskegee decided to open their own high school soon afterwards. In 1960 Drays Ferry Dam across Duck Creek caused flooding that destroyed much of downtown Sumter; although not directly attributable to Hurricane Andrew which hit 12 days later, subsequent damage made it one of the most devastating disasters ever experienced by towns within South Carolina - particularly during Reconstruction era years following such an event would leadto increased calls for more proactive government investment into local communities post-disasters such as Hurricane Andrew aftermath). During its history Sumter has had two mayors: Jesse Ladd who held office from 1946-1984 and Artie Joyner who held office from 1990-1994 before leaving for unknown reasons; both men were very active community leaders and helped promote economic development within the community while also serving on various city councils throughout their terms including becoming chairmen of the county commission upon leaving office thereby increasing oversight over day-to-day operations within city hall without having authority over budgets or other important municipal functions like street maintenance etc.; both men are buried at Mount Zion Cemetery adjacent to First Baptist Church where they have been interred since 1961 respectively.. sumtersilentiary@gmail dot com
