It was founded in 1851 by white men and women who left the then-slave state of Georgia to escape the custom of whipping children. The community's economy shifted again following the war when a large number of black veterans began arriving in search of work throughout South Carolina and North Carolina*. As recently as the late 1990s, many summer residents still living in Summerville continue to contribute their unique perspectives to local history through oral tradition, family stories, and interviews.

In 1827, Summerville became a county seat, and during the late 1800s it experienced significant growth due to the booming textile industry. In 1907, Summerville became an independent city, and in 1951 it merged with neighboring Greenville to form the current city of Summerville.
