North Charleston,SC is a town in York County, South Carolina. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. North Charleston is bordered by York to the south and east, Myrtle Beach to the west and north, and Sumter to the northwest. The first people who set foot on what would become North Charleston were Native Americans who hunted game in present-day York County. The first European settlers arrived in 1795 when John Nicholson landed on Catawba Island just off of Charleston Harbor with his small group of men searching for a new land grant. By 1810 most of what would become North Charleston had been laid out as a Township under the jurisdiction of Georgetown - an act that signaled beginning development within what would be called "the Ashley." In 1831 Union General James Longstreet's army passed through Wilson's Creek Valley on their way up the coast to try and stop Robert E Lee's Confederate army from reaching Montgomery, Alabama; some believe that General Longstreet may have seen potential wealth at those areas beyond even he could see while traveling downriver. One theory suggests that General Longstreet stopped at Fort Moultrie because it was then being built as a supply depot for his troops; this fort served as a model for many similarforts throughout South Carolina during the Civil War including Fort Wagner in Augusta and Fort Stark in Spartanburg It wasn't until after hostilities ceased that anything significant happened within town limits other than name changes (e.g., Ashley to North Charleston) until 1840 when Presbyterian minister Zebulon Pike founded Mount Zion Presbyterian Church which still remains one of town's primary institutions today In 1853 Postmaster General Amos Kendall moved into office temporarily housing government employees near Spring Hill before moving into his permanent home later that year In 1865 Union Major general Ulysses S. Grant ordered all military posts along or adjacent to coastal SC abolished due to concerns over railroad construction across state lines As more white people moved into areas now considered black neighborhoods such as West Point Avenue/JEFFERSON PARK between 1870-1920 there was gradual integration both racially and socially among these newcomers as well as native African American residents who had resided since before white settlement began . This process accelerated during Reconstruction following America’sentry into World War II which saw an influx of refugees from war-torn Europe especially following Germany’s annexation of Austria . Many African Americans had worked diligently rebuild infrastructure destroyed by conflict while also finding opportunity working alongside Whites . However , following desegregation busing initiatives led by Attorney General Thurman Arnold increased tension between races culminating with arson fires throughout Hartsville during May 1968 riots Referencing this time period neighborhood watch programs were born originally designed solely for law enforcement purposes but soon became popular social activities among young blacks seeking security against crime however often times they remained unofficially known within their respective communities until recently
