Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by white people in 1819 and named for Gideon Hanahan, an early settler. A post office called Hanahan was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Calhoun River and its ability to ship goods by boat across the river. The arrival of the railroad made Hanahan even more important, and it became a major commercial center during this time. In 1907, Hanhan became one of the few towns in Spartanburg County to be founded as a result of a state legislation entitled "An Act To Encourage Town Development." This law provided for financial assistance to towns that proposed making themselves more self-sufficient and developing their own businesses. Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,743 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a small community on the banks of the Stono River. The name Hanahan comes from Irish Gaelic hànachán meaning "head of a stream". The first settler in Hanahan was Nicholas Kearney. He and his family were farmers and built a cabin near present day Hanahan on the bank of the Stono River. In 1857, Kearney's son William opened a store in nearby Greenville which became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1860, there were 10 stores in Hanahan with an average price for goods of $3 per week. The Methodist church had been built in 1865 and served as the town's main meeting place until it burned down in 1907. In 1881, George Waddell purchased some land east of town from Nicholas Kearney and began to build what would become known as Waddell's Addition. This addition included homes, churches, schools, and mills (the first sawmill was built around 1886). The addition quickly became one of Hanahan's most popular areas because it offered good access to water resources and excellent farmland for agricultural purposes. By 1915, when World War I started,Hanahahans had established themselves as local war heroes due to their participation in various battles throughout the war including several battles along the Stono Riverfront such as during Battle Of Palmetto Creek (May 15-17), Battle Of Missionary Ridge (September 11-13), Battle Of Perryville (November 17-19) and Battle Of Blackwater Swamp (December 8-10). Many residents also took up arms against Axis forces during World War II serving under both Allied and Axis troops during campaigns such as Operation Market Garden (January 22-March 1945), Dieppe Raids (July 5 - August 7 1944), Okinawa Campaign( April 6 - May 25 1945) and Berlin Offensive( January 24 – February 3 1945). When South Carolina joined Kentucky into the Union on December 12th 9 years later that same year,Hanahahans once again found themselves prominently involved with history due to their long association with Spartanburg County dating back to its earliest days as an unincorporated community located within this county boundary
