Easley is a town in Columbia County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Easley is located on the Yadkin River and is adjacent to Spartanburg. The town was founded in 1802 by Captain James Easley and his family and named for him. In 1807, Colonel John Crouse built a ferry across the Yadkin River which facilitated trade between Easley and nearby Laurens. In 1830, General Andrew Johnson visited Easley while campaigning in South Carolina and ordered all military stores be moved from Spartanburg to Easley so as not to threaten Johnson's political prospects in that state during the election campaign that year. In 1905, entrepreneur Royal Pinchback established a chemical works here which supplied fertilizer to much of eastern South Carolina. He called it Pinchback Chemical Works until he donated it to Columbia University in 1928 as an educational facility known as "Pinchback Hall". The university used it for research into new pesticides until 1971 when it closed down due to budget cuts; however, some relics of the plant still remain today on campus as part ofPLEXUS - an environmental science museum open every day except Mondays since 1973). According to the 2000 US Census there were 7,912 people living in Easley with 5% black or African American residents (the highest percentage ever recorded for any municipality within Columbia County).[1] This number decreased significantly after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans only increasing marginally over time (-3%) primarily because then-Mayor Ray Nagin turned around quickly and rebuilt most of what had been lost[[2]). However this decrease may have been more attributable simply to natural attrition than anything done by Nagin himself - one study found that just 2% of new residents each decade move out voluntarily compared with an average 10%. A 2006 report written by management consultants McKinsey & Company estimated that if Macklinore Associates LLP could have predicted Katrina’s impacts they would have recommended extraordinary action such as evacuating entire neighborhoods before landfall[3], but their predictions proved correct insofar as homes did wind up being looted or destroyed well beyond what actually happened; however even under those assumptions significant property damage occurred nonetheless making downtown very difficult if not impossible To enter without experiencing extensive flooding (euphemistically referred to variously as “waterlogging”)[4]).
