Conway is a town in Richland County, South Carolina. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway dates back to 1824 when John Conway founded a small cabin on what is now called "The Hill", about one mile from the present day town center. The first Post Office was established in 1827 and named after John Conway's father, who had settled there in 1798. In 1828 much of Richland County was added to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase and by 1830 Conway had become an important commercial and agricultural center with over fifty stores and three hundred acres (120 hectares) of land cultivated by slaves. In 1840, while General James Longstreet's army campaign against Fort Sumter was taking place south of Conway, locals raised money to buy rifles for Confederate soldiers and soon began skirmishing with Federal forces along the Little River Road outside town limits. After Confederate General Pemberton's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th that year, many residents in Conway went into hiding or poor health returned home; however some 20-30% of the population still remained inside towns boundaries until Union troops evacuated them on April 12th under orders from Ulysses S Grant which helped drive Charleston out of Confederate hands two weeks later. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans were required to leave South Carolina for new plantations in northern states such as Georgia or Texas; however, about 10%–15% of all white residents continued to live in poverty alongside black citizens until after 1990s when large numbers left for more affordable housing areas due to suburbanization throughout most southern states etcetera anymore.

In 1815, Conway was the capital of South Carolina. It was renamed Charleston in 1847, after the Battle of Chatham, which took place in nearby Savannah, Georgia.
