Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1814 as Wilkinson's Station on the Orange River. The first post office was established in 1827 and it changed its name to Conway in 1839. The town became a city in 1899 and remains so today. Conway is located at (33.524432, -87.980972). The first settler to arrive in what is now Conway was General James Wilkinson who arrived on horseback from Augusta, Georgia on September 15, 1814 after campaigning for Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War over land grants he had received from President James Ketchum. Wilkinson's group platted out wagon roads and built homes near where they would live until 1830 when they moved ashore for good at what is now known as Wright's Ferry which served as their landing point until 1840 when they constructed a fortification next to present day Hawkins Bridge within walking distance of their new home called "Conway Plantation". In 1840 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewart Hardee destroyed all but three of Wilkinson's original dwellings; one still stands today within walking distance of the current town hall complex with an adjacent museum devoted to that period of history known as "The Confederacy Museum" opened in 1984 adjacent to another replica (of) Hardee’s plantation house also remaining extant within walking distance of both buildings – this latter replica being open daily since 1984 by appointment only for school groups from area surrounding towns including neighboring Greenwood which lies just north of Conway along UAB Boulevard across state lines; In addition many otherhistoric structures have been lost or removed over time making it difficult if not impossible accurate date/location information available for virtually any given structure encountered within modern day Conway limits! So too has much important historical data associated with early African American settlement here notably slave records & bondsman lists often referenced herein currently stored away by former City Manager Early Wilson & his successors prior thereto although some attempts have been made through various philanthropic efforts (& failed) over recent years [see video below] however such endeavors are typically met with strong opposition (& most recently successful campaign led by Mayor Joe Riley against then City Manager Early Wilson’s efforts nearly two years ago resulting ultimately in his ouster!] This latest attempt #2 follows suit albeit less successfully having commenced last week following massive public outcry generated thru social media websites such as Twitter (@conwaycitizen) particularly thru postings made shortly prior thereto @NelsonBeachSportspkgrnl via Twitterfeed www.twitter.com/NBCSNOnline/status/107857849379296704 vowing “ eventually we will get it done! ” As can be seen from foregoing lengthy report more detailed information about earlier campaigns planned or attempted subsequently throughout 2017 CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS! On May 10th 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Pemberton ordered Colonel John Coker to move all black soldiers stationed around Spartanburg County towards Fort Sumter – specifically towards Richland Co., SC – pursuant to orders issued from higher up command emanating from Mobile Alabama following events leading up to and including April 30th set off by Drayton Butler’s raid on Charleston Illinois…on April 12th 1861 Major Hosea Turner began moving 8500 slaves belonging to Aiken Co., SC military governor Tryon March 24th 1861 under genl order number 5479 entitled "Office of Special Duty among Negroes belonging to Rebel Troops." These slaves were transported via wagons into Kershaw co., SC arriving there on July 1st 1861…the vast majority reaching Fort Sumter whereabouts they remained until January 1865 inclusive!! At that point most either surrendered or were Freedmen Sold back into slavery!!! Many others never reached US soil !! Some 20000 more blacks remain unaccounted for even though extremely likely many ended up living permanently inside white households thereafter thereby joining existing white residents therein subjecting course & consequences hereafter discussed further herein… very few ever located & traced despite numerous searches conducted durinqs past several decades culminating finally yesterday with deployment of team comprising local historians & representatives thereof upon invitation provided by Mayor Joe Riley via email address jriley@coxinternetworksandnet riparianconsultantsllc
