The original line ran from Columbia to Weldon Springs, but it was abandoned because of financial difficulty. In 1865, the Union Army invaded South Carolina during the Civil War and captured most of South Carolina except for Conway. After the war ended, Conway slowly regained its status as an agricultural community until World War II when it became an industrial center due to its proximity to aluminum production plants. In 1984, Conway voters passed a referendum asking if they would like to become part of Clemson University's football stadium complex known as "The Lane." The proposal received mixed reactions from residents, with some feeling that it would increase traffic on Main Street while others felt that it would help improve infrastructure within the town limits. Ultimately, with little opposition from residents, the city council approved the project without any objection from locals
