The history of the Coast Guard in Charleston, South Carolina goes back to 1824. At that time, the Charleston Harbour Board was created to manage and protect the harbor. The board included men from both the Navy and Marines. In 1829, a group of marines banded together to form a coast guard unit known as “The 1st Regiment of Marines”. The regiment was stationed at Fort Pulaski on Hilton Head Island. On May 9, 1830, the first officers of The 1st Regiment of Marines were commissioned: Commodore John Denton (Captain), Surgeon James Lunsford (First Lieutenant), Private First Class Levi Coffin (Private First Class), Private Second Class Lewis Coffin (Private Third Class). In 1836, The 1st Regiment of Marines became part of the 7th Infantry Division which garrisoned Fortress Monroe on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. In 1840-5, when Confederate forces invaded North Carolina they ordered all coastal state militias to muster outside their capitals for 3 months training in amphibious warfare under General Beauregard. On July 10th 1850 Captains Fenton and Lunsford disembarked an American brigantine at Sullivan’s Wharf during this three day drill and took command of a small detachment guarding East Hampton Harbor; Other Marine detachments were also quartered ashore nearby at West Hampton Park and Creekhaven beaches In early 1861 Coastal Artillery Battery A arrived from neuroticsville SC with 2 pieces 30 caliber smoothbore guns having been captured by Rebel forces near Fayetteville NC while retreating from battle Sumter County GA October 1861 battery became part of 8th NY Cav Inf Div later called 9th Mountain Col Rifles HQ DeptSC army post Savannah SGF 3rd Brigade Assn November 1862 Battery moved to New Orleans LA assignment changed December 1862 Reassigned to Army Post Vicksburg Mississippi January 1863 placed in rear guard duties around Jackson MS until relieved by Union forces March 1863 Battery redesignated 4th National Artillery on 15 Apr 1865 Disbanded May 1865

In 2011-12 alone, Charleston filed more than 1 million documents with the US Corporation Records Office - including over 1 million deeds and mortgages - demonstrating its status as one of America's most prolific mayors when it comes to creating digital records such as property tax assessments or vehicle registrations.
