Wilkinsburg is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,582 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is the largest town in Lackawanna County by land area and the second-largest by population. It is one of three townships in the county. The other two are Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. The town was founded on November 3, 1795, by Nicholas Biddle as a trading post between Philadelphia and Yorktown during the French and Indian War. It was named for General George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel John Wilkins (1749–1824). In 1814, William Woodbridge bought 7 miles (11 km) of country around present-day Wilkinsburg from Nicholas Biddle to create what is now known as Barnes Township. In 1835, Jonesboro Township was created from part of Barnes Township; it became effective January 1st of each year thereafter. On July 15th of that year, Bugliosi villewas organized into Boroughs with individual officers elected at large instead of through township meetings which had been held every 2 years since 1795 when Wilkinsburg had been a part of Lancaster County. On October 12th 1861 William Woodward donated 5 acres (20 ha) northwest of what is now downtown to make way for an enlarged city park called "Woodward Park." This donation formed the nucleus for today's Downtown core where much commercial activity takes place including several high-end restaurants and nightlife venues such as The Smithfield Inn & Tavern and Live Music Hall Pittsburgh PA

Wilkinsburg is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 12,681 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Allegheny County and it is also the home of Wilkinsburg College. The first settled areas in what would become Wilkinsburg were a group of farmers who lived nearpresent-day Westmoreland and Cameron townships. In 1811, John Forbes erected a cabin on the east side of the Monongahela River, which served as a base for his fur trading business. By 1815, many settlers had moved to what would become Wilkinsburg from across Pennsylvania due to its fertile soil and good location for trade with neighbors on both sides of the Susquehanna River. The area became known as "Farmingdale" because so much commercial activity took place here that farms produced more than enough food to support all of the town's residents. In 1827, when Pittsburgh was founded as one of thirteen counties in Pennsylvania, part of Jefferson Township (now Uptown) was added to Allegheny County. This left Farmingdale unincorporated but with a rich history dating back over two hundred years it retains much of its historic feel today despite being just 6 miles away from downtown Pittsburgh! In 1907, after many years of debate between city officials and farmers over land use rights along Monongahela Street between Three Rivers Boulevard and present day Mellon Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh (the so-called "Monongahela Street War"), City Council voted unanimously to annex Wilkinsburg into Pittsburghe Borough effective February 1st 1907 On July 5th 1909 following ratification by voters fromboth cities Pharmacy Clerk George Ahern & Treasurer Jacob Schiffer prepared plat thereof setting forth lot linesackle boundaries within said Borough limits located at intersections cornering Chestnut Street & present day Washington Avenue including lots Nos 7 thru 11 inclusive within said Limits aforesaid & Lots Nos 15 thru 17 inclusive within said Limits aforesaid; thence southwesterly along Washington Avenue past erecting post road thence easterly along Third rivers Boulevard terminating at intersection with Mellon avenue
Wilkinsburg was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his brother James. The town became a hub for the Pennsylvania Railroad, which made it a major transportation center. Wilkinsburg was also the birthplace of General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War.
