The CO then passed onto lieutenant colonel Edward Fenton who held this post until 1942 when it was given back to captain James Kempton Jr., now our current CO. Throughout its history, the Hazleton Police Department has always been fraught with controversy due to its high levels of corruption and bribery which often led to wrongful arrests and prosecutions among its officers and civilians alike; however these controversies have all but dissipated over time. The first settlers in Hazleton were soldiers from Lancaster County who fought in the Revolutionary War. The town was founded on November 12, 1795 by Captain John Smith and his family. At first the only industry was agriculture; but due to increased trade with nearby Lancaster and Yorktown Institutes for learning about new farming methods, Hazleton became an important port of trade for the region. In 1812, a canal was built through Hazleton Creek to bring water from the Susquehanna River to Scranton proper; this helped increase commerce and entertainment within the town as well as improving transportation connections between Scranton and other parts of Pennsylvania and New York City. During World War I, Hazleton played an important role in supplying munitions to both American forces fighting on both sides of that conflict and also served as one of several staging areas for shipments arriving at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard during wartime. After the war ended, Hazleton regained its former importance as a commercial center with growth in manufacturing including textiles (including shoes made by Cuno’s companies), furniture (Keenan-Heineken now owns most of what remains), plastics (Plymouth Corporation bought much of what remained after Peabody Coal divested itself), electronics (Belknap Semiconductor Company) and agricultural products such as appleseeds and cornmeal. In recent years Hazleton has experienced significant gentrification with many residents moving out into apartments or large houses near downtown; however some businesses have kept their locations unchanged while others have moved into more suburban surroundings (). Hazleton is located at 42°36′N 73°24′W (); it has an elevation of 609 feet (183 meters). According to the United States Census Bureau, Hazleton has a total area of , all land. As of 2010 census data there are 2,813 people residing in Hazletown Township: 1% African American (), 0% Native American (), 95% white (). As per 2008 national census figures there are 914 people living here full time: 97% white (). There are no black residents since gentrification occurred which left much property empty.:
