The company abandoned Hazleton in 1984 but continued to operate a research lab there until 1990; it closed that year also. Today, most of what used to be the company's sprawling factory complex sits idle: only a few hundred employees are still employed there today (a fraction of those employed back then), while most other activities take place inside University Park nearby whereWestinghouse once housed some 3200 employees before it closed down in 2006 due to budget restrictions set by Mayor Richard Muhlenberg. The population was 809 at the 2000 census. The city was named for David Hazleton who settled there in 1797. The town was incorporated on December 13th, 1834. It became a borough on January 1st, 1858. In 1907 it merged with nearby Wilkes-Barre. The city began as a small farming community that developed around a sawmill and gristmill owned by David Hazleton and his family. By 1830, hazelnut trees were being grown in the area and hazelnut oil was being produced commercially. Cotton gin production also began in this time period and cottonseed mills started up around 1930. Steel production increased during World War II due to demand from Allied forces and later Hazleton became one of the largest steel plants in western Pennsylvania. During this time, many industries closed down or moved away from Hazleton due to economic depression including aluminum smelters which left behind an wasteland that is still visible today; however, recent development has resurrected some of these defunct businesses while creating new ones such as a brewery and restaurant complex called “Hazleton Brewery” which plans to open its first doors within the next year or so; a professional sports team called the Hazletons (a former football team), which currently competes in Division III college athletics; as well as numerous retail stores including several high-end department stores like Macy’s Department Store before moving into what is now known as “The Diamond Courts” shopping district which opened up adjacent to downtown in 2001 following years of planning by local business owners John Lynch Jr., Louella Tolerant Browning and others who wanted to celebrate downtown’s resurgence with new development; finally there are numerous parks dotting central Hazleton including North Park Cemetery where David Hazleton once interred his wife Sarah after she died giving birth to their son John while they awaited delivery of her brother George Washington Carver's 5 children born after her death – all 53 if you include Baby Joe (Hazelnut boy).
