Hanover is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lackawanna County was formed on December 12, 1812 from parts of Cumberland and Greene Counties. On February 15, 1827 it was erected into a separate county by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Hanover Township was created in 1824 from portions of Lackawanna Township. The borough was erected on December 12th, 1920 from what had been Hanover Township and Green Township. The first settler in Hanover Township may have been James Aiken who arrived there in 1825 as part of a group that included John Kapp and Nicholas Scherrer. James Aiken and his family were among the first residents to live in what is now known as the town of Scranton which then consisted only of their farmstead and one house built by him on what is now Broadway Street near where East Market Street meets Avenue D (now York Boulevard). In 1830 James Aiken married Ann Smith who had also come to America with her husband Peter Smith from Scotland some years before. They raised six children: four boys and two girls; Anna (1829-1896), Matilda (1831-1914), Isabella (1833-1903), Jessie (1835-1915)and John Alfred Aiken Jr.(1839-1924). The new kingdom included parts of what is now Pennsylvania and (until 1774) also the present-day Delaware Valley. At its peak in population size, the kingdom had a population of over six million people. Hanover was eventually annexed by Prussia in 1871, creating a unified Germany. The history of Hanover begins with its incorporation as a borough in 1794. In 1868, it became an incorporated town and then an unincorporated township until 1959 when it became an incorporated village. As an incorporated village, Hanover was one of the original seventeen municipalities within Pennsylvania that were created on November 1, 1792 pursuant to the act providing for the organization and government of Pennsylvania townships. The creation ofHanover helped to establish Lancaster as one of the leading agricultural centers in central Pennsylvania during the 19th century. During World War II, much damage was done to Hanover Village by German bombers during air raids on Lancaster City on April 15th and 16th 1945. However, little physical damage occurred toHanover because most residents chose to remain indoors rather than risk being targets for enemy fire or capture alive.
