This annexation set off a chain reaction where other municipalities in Luzerne County chose to annex similar names such as Altoona (1897), Johnstown (1907), Carbonia ( 1912 ), and even Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (1920). By 1922 there were twenty four municipalities listed with similar titles including Aspinwall, Beattyville/ Blacklawn/ Parkersburg(1922), Easton( 1923 ), Kingston Heights( 1924 ), Moon Lake ( 1925 ), Northumberland Heights( 1926 ), Pine Grove( 1927 ), Ramapo Hills( 1928 ), Southside Heights( 1929 ) Swatara Heights(( 1930)), Westmoreland Heights(( 1931)), White Sands (( 1932)), Beaver Dam (( 1933)), Cherryvale(( 1934)), Portersville(( 1935)), Washington Mills(( 1936)), Swede Creek (( 1937)) and Wilkes-Barre City Hall Annexed(( 1938)). There are currently only thirteen communities identified with their original local name followed by their current municipality name . One interesting aspect about town history is that not all residents in Hanover originated from within the township or borough itself; some residents lived far away while others were born here but died elsewhere before moving back home. One example is Moses Ewing who grew up in Swatara Heights but moved back to his childhood home near Altoona when he married Anna Palmer in 1834 .
