Altoona is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. Altoona is the county seat of Armstrong County. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Altoona was John Fitzpatrick in 1795. George Washington visited Altoona on September 25, 1798 and established a trading post there with traders from Philadelphia and New York City. In 1812, James Knoppers built a log cabin near present-day Altoona on land that he had acquired from his father-in-law, Nicholas Roebling. The first school in Altoona was taught by Rev. Drury (1799-1851). A Presbyterian church was erected in 1814 and dedicated by Governor Andrew Jackson; it remains an active church today. In 1850, gold was discovered at Saylorville but no coins were ever found as this mine failed to produce any significant amounts of gold over time . However, silver discoveries did occur due to various veins being located within the larger Saylorville deposit which included three main silver veins: One vein ran northeast to west along Knowlton Pike about one mile east of the current downtown intersection; another vein ran southeast to northwest on Beaver Road just south of Market Square; and a third vein runs southwest to northeast on Germantown Pike just north ofpresent day Sannerstown Township boundaries This 3rd Silver Mine opened up around 1865 when new owners leased part of the old Saylorville Mines including the abandoned Silver Mines Nos 1 & 2 for storage purpose only until their sale back to Noyes Mining Company effective November 15th 1865 To date still some unexploded ordnance remains from these mines dating back to 1862/1865 giving evidence that during WWII both UMWA forces as well as later "friendly" forces used them not just for storage purposes but also for military activity!

Altoona is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2010 census. Altoona is the second largest city in Butler County after Lawrence. Altoona was founded by German immigrants in 1784 and became part of the United States in 1876. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first known settlers were Peter Kapp and Johann Wilhelm Erickson from Heidelberg, Germany who arrived on July 1, 1784. They built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street and named it Kapp's Ferry Landing for their farmstead across the river from where it still stands today. In 1785, two brothers by the name of Weber began to farmed near Altona on land donated by John Denton and William Penn (the founder of Philadelphia). At that time, Altoona was just a small hamlet with no permanent residents other than those living along its shores during summertime when access to boats allowed for transportation commerce between Lancaster and Philadelphia or vice versa. In 1800, Philip Stockinger bought some land east of Altoona from John Forbes which he used as his farmstead until his death in 1809. After his death, his son Peter took over management of the property until 1840 when he sold it to James Caird who developed it into what we see today including much of downtown Altoona which opened up following development around Kapp's Ferry Landing starting in 1846-47 spearheaded byWilliam Fetterman himself! In 1875-76 Edwin Hirschfeld designed an excellent home called "The Cradle" located at 12th & Elm Streets not far from where modern day Market Plaza Shopping Center stands today! This well managed house saw many changes through years ownership but remained one glance away from becoming another brick building typical style hereabouts! In 1886-87 George Rapp (1853-1921) purchased "The Gables" 5 buildings west of Market Square - this included 3 stories high - this made him oneofthe earliest developers/buildersinAltoonawithamajor involvement intothefuture central business district! Altogether Rapp constructed approximatley350 buildings throughoutAltoonnaduringhislifethroughouthislifeplusadditionalstructuresontheeastsideofthetowncenter!! It wasn't long before businesses within town started opening up onto High Street McFarlane & Wertheim Builders Hardware being followedby J S Lowry's grocery store as early as 1892!!! The closing/saleofLowry'sstorein1992createdalittlebitofacertain turbulencewithinthetownbutnothinglasting!! All major events leading up thesaleofCentraliaPharmacy INC.(nowCVS Pharmacy) took place inside Town Hall on Washington Avenue beginning December 15th 1991!!!This marked alotof changeforthedowntownalonsofalsimilarityTO CentraliawhichstillexistsandiscurrentlyenhancedwithanattractivenewrestaurantcalledPizza Hut!! Finally ! A new convenience store has been added just south of White Sands Drive called Walmart !! What more could you want ???
