Altoona, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1795 by settlers who arrived from Ulster County, New York. The name Altoona comes from the Algonquian word "al-tawa" meaning "a place where fish are caught." The first settler in what is now Altoona was James Wright, who emigrated from Scotland in 1795. Wright built a log cabin on the site of what is now North High School and named it Wrightstown after himself. In 1824, John Denny established a post office at Altoona and named it Dennysville after his father-in-law, David Denny. In 1828, Benjamin Rush set up a school for children at Altoona and named it Rockwood Academy after himself. After two years of operation, Rockwood Academy closed because of lack of funds. However, Rush reopened the school in 1830 as Northampton Academy with instruction in reading and writing for students between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. By 1836, Northampton Academy had become an all-male academy called Westminster College which continued to operate until 1925 when it merged with Bryn Mawr College to form Bryn Mawr University. In 1864, Congress passed an act providing for statehood for the Lehigh Valley; consequently, Westminster College became part of Bryn Mawr University and Northampton Academy became part of Easton Community Schools District #1 (now Beaver County). On October 2nd 1860 US President Abraham Lincoln issued General Order No 1 authorizing residents of Allegheny County to vote by Representation instead of Slaves under Section 5(a) Constitution Revision Act 1861 which required all men over 21 years old to be registered with their local government before they could cast ballots! This event helped spur voting activity among local farmers and citizens who were angered by slavery throughout America! In 1865 during World War I there was an increase in immigration to Altoona due tothe war effort; this led to more businesses opening up throughout the community including three hotels/motels: The Lancaster Hotel (now known as The Inn at Penn Hills), The Keystone Hotel (now known as Best Western Plus), and Sunrise MOTEL which still stands today at 4th Street & South 3rd Avenue! During World War II efforts were made by both sides within society not just through warfare but also through propaganda such asradio broadcasts that promoted patriotic values such as democracy
