Altoona is a small city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Altoona is the county seat of Lehigh County and home to the University of Pittsburgh. It is also the site of Altoona Regional Airport. The first European efforts to settle this area were made by Colonel John Forbes in 1795 and Captain David Dixon in 1800. In 1806, Samuel Colt started production on his revolver in Altoona and this led to early settlement of this part of Pennsylvania by farmers from other parts of the country looking for new markets for their products. In 1825, John Dennison laid out a township called "Dixon's Corner" in what is now Altoona. He named it after Captain David Dixon who had Explored this territory with him during the American Revolutionary War. During World War II, many people from Altoona served in the US military including Alpena native George Patton who commanded Allied forces advancing through Europe during Operation Market Garden and later became Supreme Commander of NATO’s Allied Forces North Africa (AFNORA) during Operation Torch which liberated North Africa from Nazi Germany. The city was founded as a town on December 12, 1855 by Andrew Mellon when he became Secretary of Treasury under President James Ketchum Jr.. The name was changed back to Altoona on December 12th 1907 following president Woodrow Wilson's suggestion that it be renamed after Air Force Base Hale-On-the-Lake near Chicago Illinois instead due to its location just east of that base which then housed RAF Upper Heyford Island No 4 (No 3 Group). This change followed complaints about an all too common practice among towns throughout America whereby they were renamed after places they never lived or served - such as Pittsburghese Township becoming Yorktown Township – while their residents continued to call them accordingly! In 1927, with United States Steel Corporation having bought much land within walking distance of its mills in downtown Altoona, construction began on what would become one of Steel City's most famous landmarks – Pittsburgh's first civic/commercial center featuring a monumental two story red brick building designed by noted architect McKim Mead & White with neoclassical elements built around it; Completed less than two years after Mellon had purchased 8 acres adjacent to current Union Station for $10 per acre – remaining until demolition began more than 40 years later! In 1931 Mellon donated additional property across Main Street from today’s Allegheny County Courthouse Square containing over 100 acres including four quarries used for building stone for various buildings within downtown and four miles north along I-70 providing ample opportunity for development; One million dollars were raised through civic organizations and private donations towards parkland acquisition surrounding Downtown before National Park Service management acquired it outright through donation in 1978 resulting in creation of Downtown Park District! Today nearly all physical remnants associated with Steel City are located within Downtown Park District boundaries - including iconic Duquesne Exchange Tower still standing despite being bombed twice during World War II! With industry having largely shifted southward since steel production ended following World War II – leaving behind few reminders outside present day suburban areas – Downtown Park District has taken up much slack as responsible governing body; currently working hard to maintain both public awareness and infrastructure while ensuring continuous economic vitality….
