The first guns were brought over from England in the early 1800s. Altoona, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 by Dutch colonists and was home to the world’s first gunsmithing school. The townspeople started using guns for protection and hunting during the Revolutionary War. It wasn’t until 1825 that a shooting range became available in Altoona. Starting in 1875, rifle clubs began meeting here to shoot at local parks. For a time, there were even tournaments held here where qualifying rounds were fired at various distances from the ground. In 1903, Congress passed the Gun Control Act which banned most handguns except those with a serial number registered with police departments. The city of Altoona followed suit two years later by banning all pistols and revolvers with barrels less than .32 inches wide or those without stocks or sights other than telescopic sights. As of 2018, only shotguns are allowed to be possessed within city limits. In 1911, Captain John Fenton purchased a shotgun from an anonymous source and set up shop in an old log cabin on State Street near downtown Altoona. At this point, gun control laws had changed significantly as result of events such as World War I and Prohibition efforts: handguns still couldn’t be possessed without a permit but shotguns could now be bought “unregistered” (i.e., not registered with any government). Captain Fenton quickly became known as one of the leading firearms dealers in town and his store continued to thrive until 1925 when he sold his business to George Auerbach Jr., founder of Auerbach Camera Company Incorporated (ACCI) located on Elmira Avenue across from City Hall today! In 1802, James White moved from Lancaster to start a flour mill on the lower Susquehanna River close to where today's Uniontown shopping center stands. White soon developed other mills including Whitewater Mill which produced woolen cloth until 1865; Northumberland Mills which manufactured iron rods until 1861; Wernersville Mills which made shoes until 1870; Kinnear's Mill which manufactured cheese from milk products until 1888; as well as many small businesses like grocers and hardware stores that continued operating into the 20th century During its heyday as a manufacturing center duringthe 19th century when it employed up to 100 people per year there were also several churches built here such as First Congregational (1847), Second Congregational (1860), Presbyterian (1868), Methodist Episcopal (1892) and Baptist (1912). The last church congregation disbanded in 1971 when members sold their property back to township ownership A locomotive depot served as an important stop on passenger trains traveling between Philadelphia & Pittsburgh during World War II while nearby Scranton handled munitions production . During postwar years much development took place around this area including increasing numbers of homes being erected along Bloomfield Avenue north of Market Street among them being one Roy Orbach home whose view down Market Street can still be seen today
