It is the county seat of Armstrong County and home to Altoona State University. Altoona was founded in 1795 by George Washington as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town quickly grew into an important commercial center, becoming known for itsproducts such as cloth and cigars. In 1867, Altoona became the capital of Armstrong County when it was absorbed into Pennsylvania. Today, Altoona remains an important economic center with a strong cultural presence. The city has experienced some growth over the past few decades, with new development coming up around Interstate 81 and Interstate 80. Some of these developments include: The Howard Theatre District, which includes several high-end theaters; The Scranton Hotel/Casino; and Park Place mall across from Valley Forge National Cemetery - all of which are major tourist attractions in their own right.
Since the launch of the USAF in 1948, a number of gift history have been made. Gift history continues with contributions from fighter jets such as F-15E Strike Eagles and F-16C/D Eagle aircraft; satellite systems like MODIS and Geostationary Satellite Communications System (GSCS); rifles like M1 Garand and AK47s; vehicles like Humvees, Ford Broncos and Humvees II; clothing items like flak jackets and fatigues; medical supplies such as morphine inhalers, antibiotics and hospital gowns; tools including bulldozers, saws, hammers and screwdrivers; musical instruments such as guitars, keyboards or accordiones; food items like pizza or spaghetti dishes; toys such as cars or airplanes. It is easy to see how these gifts have helped improve life for millions of people around the world. It is also clear that there are countless other donations that could be made through the Gift History Program.
