It became a part of the United States in 1790 and was named for General George Washington's headquarters at Aliquippa Creek, about three miles (5 km) north of the town. The original settlers were farmers and their families who lived on large farms east of Aliquippa Creek. As the years went by, however, many people began to move into the community because it offered convenient transportation to markets and other points of interest near Pittsburgh and Erie. By 1840, when Aliquippa had a post office and two churches, it had become an important commercial center with its own railroad station and several stores. In 1851, the Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & Museum was constructed in nearby Monroeville Township; it remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations despite being closed to visitors since 1991 due to damage caused by Hurricane Andrew.
