Wilsonville was founded in 1876 by Captain Elijah French and his wife, Nannie. The first post office was established in the town on January 15, 1876. By the end of 1877, there were six posts in Wilsonville. In 1880, the Wilsonville School District was organized and it became a part of the Portland School District. The population of Wilsonville grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1895 there were over 1,500 residents living in the town. According to one source, "The [Wilsonville] Chamber of Commerce...promoted general development through its promotion of social events and its support for public improvements." During World War I, Wilsonville served as a troopship disembarking troops at Callaway Bayou. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home and businesses began to reopen. On November 24, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson delivered his final speech from Mount Vernon in Washington D.C.. Located just outside of Wilsonville on federal land which had been ceded to Oregon by Congress following Oregon's entry into statehood in 1889, Mount Vernon is now recognized as an official U.S./Oregon Historic Site. In 1951-1952 (the late 1940s), revitalization efforts began within what is now called "The City" or downtown area with new streets being built including Fourth Street South between SW Morrison Avenue and SW First Street south; Second Street east from Morrison Avenue north; Third Street east from Morrison Avenue south; and Southwest Third Street west from Morrison Avenue north to become North Fourth Street (now known as University Boulevard).
