The Dalles National Guard is a local, state and federal grass-roots organization that provides support to law enforcement officers throughout the Portland metropolitan area. The National Guard was activated on September 2, 1940 as part of the United States War Department's mobilization plan for the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The present entity dates back to 1941 when the Oregon National Guard assembled at Astoria Army Base in preparation for Federal service in the war. The first commanders of the Oregon National Guard were Majors General Clifford L. Smith and Major General Earl Fenton who served until 1945 when they were replaced by Generals John S. Hunt and George M. Armstrong respectively. Since its inception, the Oregon National Guard has fought in both world wars and protect our citizens during peacetime times including providing security at Multnomah County fairs, community events such as PCC meetings or outdoor concerts, or simply guarding against possible troublemakers within our own borders. Throughout its history, there have been many different types of gifts given to various members of the Oregon National Guardsmen from individuals interested in showmanship (e.g., Commander Harry Truman),Operation Good Governance (e.g., Governor Neil Abercrombie), patriotic items (e.g., WWII Victory Medals), equipment donations (e.g., tanks/weapons/ammunition) or just plain old appreciation (such as a New Year's gift). In some cases there have also been special occasions such as Memorial Day or Christmas where all members receive a gift regardless of branch affiliation or service commitment!
The National Guard is a civilian militia force of the United States. The National Guard was created by the Militia Act of 1792 and is one of the two branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, alongside the military. In 1938, the National Defense Authorization Act established a uniformed service for certain purposes within the National Guard, including state duty in times of war or national emergency; these functions were transferred to Air Force forces in 1951. The current mission and organization of the National Guard may be traced back to World War II when patriotic Americans mobilized for military service throughout America. A 1940 study found that nearly half of all men over 18 years old had served in some capacity in defense organizations since 1917-1918; this mobilization led to enrollment growth at West Point from 1,200 students in 1937 to 10,000 by 1942. Since then there have been periodic calls for increased member recruitment activities due to changing needs and changes in American society such as 9/11 which has called into question many previous assumptions about what constitutes an "essential" function for a national guard unit serving our country during wartime or an "emergency." There are currently around 800,000 active duty members (the vast majority being reserve officers) who serve across 34 states and D.C., with forces available both on call (when needed) and on base (when not). These troops are spread out along most major metropolitan areas with distribution ranges from large urban centers like New York City or Los Angeles to smaller towns near Appalachia or Texas ranching communities. There are also units stationed overseas where capabilities vary depending on location: Guam has a Marine Corps detachment while Okinawa has Army Rangers oiled up for combat operations against Japan

In 2002 Shell Petroleum Company agreed to sell its interest inthe field for $8 million dollars. Production recommenced in 2006 but ceased again due to environmental concerns about shale gas reserves nearby that may contain high levels of methane or other pollutants.. New wells were drilled in 2011 producing natural Gas liquids (NGL) which are used as feedstock for gasoline production.
