Newberg, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is located in Multnomah County and lies on the banks of the Multnomah River. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. The Newberg Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places property that includes many buildings from the early 20th century. The area around Newberg was first settled by Euro-Americans in the mid-19th century. In 1851, John Wesley Powell mapchecked a group of prospectors west of this village and named it Newberg after one of their leaders, David Noyes. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Newberg and it had become an agricultural center with wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and other crops yielding income for merchants and farmers alike. A post office was opened here on October 1, 1871 (the date now celebrated as Oregon's centennial). In 1902, Jens Jensen formed Portland-based Pacific Electric Railway to extend service eastward from Salem across the Willamette Valley to new towns like Portland and Milwaukie along its route; part of his motivation for doing so may have been money he made selling land along route. In 1912–13 when Bell Telephone Companies extended telephone service through central Oregon they built phone poles near present day Newberg to intercept calls going into or out of Multnomah County while still using existing roads; these phone poles are still standing today! In 1902, a school district was organized, and by 1916 Newberg had reached its current size with a high school, two churches (St John's Episcopal and First Methodist), a library (founded in 1909), a hotel/motel (1896), and several small businesses including one store that still operates today called The Old Millinery Store. The Klamath River flood of 1937 destroyed much of downtown but nonetheless spurred development around the riverfront including new housing developments such as Cedar Knolls and Beacon Hill while also resulting in creation of Newberg Park which includes portions of both Cedar Knolls development as well as adjacent acreage currently used for industrial purposes including an ammunition plant operated by Walmart Supercenter which closed down in 2018 after 120 years
