Lake Oswego, Oregon is a natural freshwater lake located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The body of water was formed by the confluence of the Willamette River and Lake Oswego Creek. It is about 297 miles (541 km) long, averaging 20 feet (6 m) wide at its widest point, and has a surface area of 3,834 acres (1,500 ha). In 1825, General George Washington ordered Captain John McLoughlin to explore potential sites for an arsenal on the Columbia River because he believed that British forces were quartered near present-day Seattle and could use those locations to bomb American settlements in Oregon. After exploring many possibilities, McLoughlin chose what is now Lake Oswego as his site for an arsenal because it had flat ground with good access to waterwayside crossings for artillery ammunition and supplies. The first post office at Oswego was established in 1827. In 1851–1852, when gold began being discovered on the nearby Yakima River floor, companies were organized to prospect for gold near Lake Oswego; these companies became known as "the adventurous set."
