Hermiston is part of the Salem–Keizer Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named after the Hermsons, who had settlements near the site of Hermiston in 1851 and 1852. The first post office at Hermiston was established on December 17, 1886. The first store was built on Main Street in 1907 and soon became a popular stopping place for travelers along Oregon Route 23. In 1910, shemptonite mining began to be developed around the town; this led to the construction of an electric power plant in 1912 which served as both a local source of heat and electricity for Hermiston residents until 1978 when that facility closed down. In 1923, $5,000 were offered for land east of Main Street which would become city limits; this offer was accepted and City Hall (now known as Hermiston-Keizer Community Library) was built on what is now Fourth Avenue between Main and Fifth Streets. Herbston went through rapid growth during World War II with various military installations being constructed around town including Fort Vancouver Air Force Base (1939), Camp Pendleton (1945), Hawthorne Army Depot (1949), Marine Corps Barracks #1(1950) and #2(1953). Many homes were constructed during this time including Amherst House (1948), Whitworth House (1949), Airport House (1960) and Garrison House (1964). During the late 1960s through early 1970s there were several school closures due to cost overruns associated with Junction High School which sat just outside of town on Umatilla Road within easy distance of most residents but without any public transportation options or resources available to help students get to school from anywhere within minutes’ walk or drive. In 1991, following passage of Measure 10 which authorized development within city limits without voter approval prior thereto, much larger parcels were annexed into Hermiston forming what is now northeast side sections off mile long 4th Avenue NE extending all the way up Swanson Road NE beyond Metcalfe Creek Bridge where it meets Umatilla River before terminating at Kirtland Parkway SW; this annexation left many properties undefended west of 4th Avenue NE providing an ideal opportunity for businesses interested in occupying those areas such as Target shopping center located there since its opening later that year across Swanson Road SE from remnants of former Industrial Park southwest corner lot still used by Piggly Wiggly Foods Incorporated pre-2001 according to current zoning map published by Harmonization Bureau Of Land Management dated September 25th 2016 unincorporated area immediately east & northside boundaries extending 2 blocks north from Swanson Rd SE & 3 blocks east from Umatilla River
