Woodward was named after General Andrew Jackson, who was president at the time. The town was founded in 1867 when a railroad company built a track through the area. In 1881, an oil well was discovered in the area and the town began to grow. The population increased so much that it required a bypass system for the town. The bypass was built and is still in use today.
