Woodward, Oklahoma is home to the world's first coffee roaster. The first Coffee Roasters of Woodward was founded in 1922 by Harry and Florence Peake. Harry Peake was a grocery store manager who decided to start his own business selling coffee. He named the company "Coffee Roasters of Woodward." The first roast of coffee beans was made in 1922 and it was a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans. At that time, there were only two roasters in town - Coffee Roasters of Woodward and The Waffle Shop. Both businesses roasted their own beans, but Coffee Roasters of Woodward became more popular because they offered a wider variety of flavors than their competitors. In 1935, the company merged with The Griggs Place Grocery Company to become Greenwood Coffee & Tea Corporation. Greenwood changed its name to Bedrock Coffee & Tea in 1970 when it bought out Griggs Place Grocery Company's shareholding in the company.Bedrock continued to produce its own roast-quality coffee until it went bankrupt in 1984. However, as Greenwood had been producing high quality coffees for over 100 years, many people still considered it one of the best coffee companies in history. Today, Bedrock is part of Starbucks Corporation and continues to produce high quality coffee for both consumers and retailers around the world

Thanks to its location on both American and Mexican soil, Woodward was also home to some of the region’s most important munitions plants. The war ended abruptly for Woodward in 1945, when the US entered World War II again and destroyed all of its fuel supplies. Although oil production stopped completely in Oklahoma City by this time, it remained an important center for manufacturing until the late 1990s when it went into decline. Today, much of Woodward remains abandoned but it has been made into a popular tourist destination thanks to its rich history and beautiful scenery.

The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican War and died at the Battle of Buena Vista on October 6, 1847.
