Woodward, Oklahoma is a small town located in southeastern Oklahoma. The population was 1,792 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskogee County, Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1903 by two brothers named Augustus and John Woodward. The first store opened in 1911 and the first post office was established in 1913. The name of the post office was changed to Woodward in 1942 because of World War II propaganda. Woodward has been a village since 1907 when it incorporated as a borough. In 1951, it became an unincorporated community again. Woodward is known for its lumber industry which peaked during the early 1900s but has since declined due to competition from other industries such as oil production and farming. However, some remnants of this past industry remain such as the Woodward Lumber Company Museum which displays artifacts from the lumber industry including sawmills, Model T cars, trucks and more.
