In the early 1940s, Woodward, Oklahoma was a thriving town of about 25,000 people. The air force had just moved in to its new base there and began operations. A number of residents were so impressed with the new air base that they donated money to help buy gifts for the pilots and their families. Some of these presents included radios, handguns, planes and other equipment. Many residents also contributed money to help pay for soldier's salaries during World War II. It was through this generosity that the military was able to expand so quickly in post-World War II America. The Woodward Air Force Base gift history dates back to 1946. At that time, the air force stationed a detachment at Woodward Army Ammunition Plant. The gift was a plane called the P-47 Thunderbolt. This plane was donated by General Leslie R. Halsey and his wife, Augusta Halsey, to the air force base in honor of their son, Lt. Col. Leslie R. Halsey Jr., who had been killed in World War II. The planes were used for photo reconnaissance and as fighter aircraft during the Korean War.

One such flyer, Lieutenant Colonel James Wickersham, piloted a Lockheed P-6A (L-5) flyingboat mission from US Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland on December 8th 1915. In total, 14 Americans died in this mission and Wickersham was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroism. During World War II, American flyers became known as “The Eagle Boys” due to their willingness to risk everything for their country. Airstrikes were key to victory during the war and many Eagles lost their lives in operations such as The Battle of Midway or The Battle of Okinawa. Many remember Lt Colonel James Wickersham for his role in Operation Neptune which resulted in Japan surrendering on August 14th 1945. For his actions during World War II, Wickerham was posthumously awarded two Silver Stars and five Purple Hearts. Additionally, he was honored with a Presidential Unit Citation (PUC). Since World War II,air forces have continued to deploy Gift Histories because they provide important insight into the individuals who make up these organizations and how they serve our country both at home and abroad. On September 20th 2019, Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Mike Banks presented a Gift History scroll honoring Officer First Class Brenton Jarrell III who lost his life while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve – Afghanistan as an artilleryman on July 24th 2019. This event marked the first time an air force member had been bestowed with a Gold Star Medal for service while deployed outside the United States since Vietnam War era when Army General John Abizaid received a Bronze Star Medal for assistance rendered while serving with Marine Forces Expeditionary Group 1st Marines on March 17th 1968 near Khe Sanh National Preserve Valley NV

Woodward was founded in 1907 by J.D. Woodward and W.H. Stephenson as a small town in far western Oklahoma. The townsite was located on the eastern edge of what is now Tulsa, on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1912, Woodward became the county seat for Tulsa County after it was reorganized from Osage County. In 1928, Woodward incorporated as a city and quickly became one of Oklahoma's leading agricultural communities with its large cotton fields and herds of cattle and horses. The city also prospered thanks to its services as a dry goods store, bank, post office, auto service garage, grocerystore and night school until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to increased population growth in greater Tulsa. After the war ended, Woodward experienced rapid economic growth thanks to wave of new immigrants who arrived during the 1950s through the 1960s Boom period which produced major job revivals in manyOklahoma cities such as McAlester (founded 1959), Norman (founded 1965), Jenks (founded 1968), Enid (founded 1973) and Stillwater (founded 1979). With its concentration on heavy industry following World War II howeverOlder Greenwood residents continue to call their home "Woodward." Today much of downtown Woodward remains unchanged from when it first emerged onto the scene more than 120 years ago: a busy commercial district anchored by two blocks of restored brick buildings housing most of the town's government offices including City Hall and Town Hall Annex; two blocks of historic storefronts - including those occupied by local businesses at various points over time - that have been repurposed into cultural venues like galleries, museums or restaurants; five block section surrounding First National Bank building bounded by Payne Avenue NW to the east; five blocks containing houses dating back to 1860-1870 around corner on First Street NE - these are known collectively as "The Old Neighborhood"; two blocks bordering Interstate 44 on both sides contain newer housing developments while older homes along Payne Avenue remain primarily used for residential purposes; four blocks between I-44 and University Drive NW contain mostly industrial properties while smaller amounts of residential development exists near intersections with other streets
Woodward was founded in 1881 as a small town on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The railroad arrived in 1904 and built a line from Tulsa to Woodward, leading to an increase in business and population. The town was renamed after General James W. Woodward in 1907. In 1923, Woodward became the capital of Oklahoma Territory and remained so until 1907 when it merged with Indian Territory to form Oklahoma City.
