Shawnee is a city in the eastern part of Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Haskell County and was founded on November 3, 1907 by pioneers who named it for Shawnee Chief Joseph Chivington. The City of Shawnee was incorporated on February 14, 1909. It became a city-county merger on December 1, 1959. The population was 54,623 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Shawnee was Joseph Chivington who named it after himself and his family in 1907. He built a log cabin near the present day town square and began to trade goods with the Indians he met along his journey westward from Kentucky. By 1912, he had two other log cabins and several acres (km²) of land irrigated with puncheons water from a springs near today's intersection of US Highway 36 andold US Highway 66. In addition to his trading post and farmstead, Chivington erected a small schoolhouse in 1916 which he used as his home until his death in 1924. In 1908, pioneer John Wesley Powell discovered oil shale deposits east of Tulsa in what is now Haskell County while exploring for new oil resources area northwest of Wichita Falls, Texas during the Klondike Gold Rush era (). On November 3 that year - one month before Stroudsburg Preparatory School opened its doors to students - local residents voted to name their city after Chief Joseph Chivington – then just 24 years old – for services rendered during this important find! This dedication helped solidify Shawnee's place as an agricultural center due to its easy access to markets located south of Tulsa; especially since most products sold here were exported back East! After serving as mayor pro tempore ( presiding officer ) for three terms beginning on January 1st 1905 until October 16th 1906 under then Mayor Wm Muhlenberg (), City Councilman James Baughman served as mayor from 1911 through 1915 when he resigned due to ill health; later being succeeded by Orval Ladd ().
