Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma and one of the most populous cities in the United States. The city was founded by Choctaw Indians in 1867, and became a U.S. city on February 15, 1907. As of 2016, Oklahoma City had an estimated population of 569,137 people. The city is located in northeastern Oklahoma adjacent to Tulsa County and is bordered by Wichita County to the south and east, Kiowa County to the north, Canadian County to the west, and Muskogee County to the northwest. The area that would become Oklahoma City was first explored by Native Americans during what is now known as the Great Lakes region. In 1827, Captain James Ketchum discovered oil reserves near present-day Oklahoma City while leading a group of fur traders into this area searching for new land to settle. After exploring these resources for some time, Ketchum decided not to pursue them further but returned home with his findings on July 20th, 1827. On October 11th of that year, General Jesse Thompson granted patent #822 for 640 acres (2 km²) of land at what would later become downtown Oklahoma City from Osage Nation Chief Tecumseh Sufficient’s domain east of town on Ottawa River. This grant included rights over all mineral rights associated with this land as well as other valuable assets within today’s boundaries of OKC including: river banks overlooking downtown; prime real estate sites along 3rd Street between Broadway and Robinson Streets;PLUS business districts such as 7th Avenue South between Main Street and Washburn Avenue;and numerous other areas today forming part of central Downtown OKC which includes nearly every major business district in town today plus several hundred smaller parcels adding up to more than 2 square miles (5 km²). On January 6th 1830 following passage of General Order No 1710 entitled “An Act To provide For Government Of The Territory Of Kansas And Indian Territory Beyond The Missouri River” by Territorial Governor James Bowie et al., both Comanches together numbering about 25 males under direction or military command were ordered into Indian Territory effective January 1st 1830 no matter their age or sex who failed “To perform any Military Duty whatsoever within said Territories Which he may be ordered To attend And Serve In By Order Of His Majesty . . . All such Persons Now existing Within said Territories Who Are Unlawfully Absent Without Leave From Their Homes Or Chiefs etc…. shall Be Hampered In All Their Rights & Privileges Which They Enjoyed Before date” This order Came into effect immediately upon its publication setting off a months long battle between local Native American leaders led by Standing Rock Sioux chief Crazy Horse against government forces commanded by Major George Armstrong Custer at Fort Cobb outside modern day Tulsa then also taking place throughout Indian Territory generally along rivers valleys where military posts were established often resulting in massive civilian casualties with estimates ranging anywhere from 50 – 350 fatalities per month reported at various points over period November 1830 thru March 1831 when finally peace was restored after weekslong siege being initiated primarily due to pressure from President Andrew Johnson In early 1836 John Wesley Powell discovered oil deposits near present-day Tulsa while surveyor on behalf Great Western Company under contract from Secretary Atchison et al.. On July 7th1836 US Army Colonel Emmett O'Neal negotiated surrender agreement with Choctaw Chief Atsuta which resulted in drilling operations starting September 24th1836 led by George Fenton beginning production on December 16th1836 initially using crude oil rather than natural gas but eventually producing both types until April 1888 when choice interests reverted back control back to Indians permanently

This base helped to arm many American soldiers and help contribute to victory in that war. However, by 1950, there had been a noticeable increase in businesses and population within the city limits. In that year, Mayor John Hennigan declared downtown OKC "the new center of town."Today, Tulsa is still considered one of Oklahoma's most populous cities with over 120,000 residents.
