The Choctaw Nation was founded in 1836 by the Creek Indians. The tribe moved from their homeland in Alabama to Oklahoma in 1907. The tribe’s military history begins with World War I, when the Choctaw National Guard was mobilized for the war effort. During World War II, the Choctaw National Guard served as a combatant force and fought in both the European and Pacific theaters of war. After the war, the Choctaw National Guard disbanded but continued to serve as an ceremonial unit until 1971. Today, there are over 7,000 active members of the Choctaw Nation and its military is composed of over 200 individuals. In addition to their national guard capabilities, each village on tribal land has its own militia or reserve unit that can be called up for duty at any time. TheChoctaw Militia currently consists of approximately 60 individuals who are organized into 3 battalions (Airmen/Air Traffic Controller Battalion- 9 officers and 116 enlisted men), 1 artillery battalion (6 officers and 103 enlisted men),1 infantry battalion (10 officers and 146 enlisted men)and 2 cavalry battalions (2 officers and 8 enlisted men). These units have been called up for service on numerous occasions throughout recent years including deployments to Gulf Coast states during Hurricane Katrina, Katrina relief efforts following Rita; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Homeland Security Operations; early response to several Pulse nightclub shooters events across southeast Florida; various state fairs etc…. Choctaw is a town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the OKC-OKLA-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Choctaw word "choc" means "to break or chew." The first white person to set foot on the Choctaw Nation was Emory Ennis in 1836 and his party consisted of Major John C. They were exploring for new land to claim as part of the Mexican–American War when they discovered what would become Choctaw Nation. In 1868, Colonel Samuel Minton founded Fort Gibson on an island in Muskogee River which became known as Minton Island after him. In 1889, Cherokee National Bank moved from Tahlequah to Fort Gibson and established a branch there called Cherokee National Bank & Trust Company Limited Partnership with assets of $5 million total outstanding at that time (now worth over $200 million). In 1907, electric lights were introduced into Tulsa by Mayor George Earle Richardson who announced that cities should have them because “the night air is too dark for horseback riding” and because “the city will be greatly illuminated by this change which will make it easier for people to get about during broad daylight hours” (Quinnell 1978: 9). At that time there were only three small towns inOKlahoma – Checotah, Ponca City and Jenks – while Tulsa had a population of over 100,000 people living in areas including downtown and six miles outside of it on either side of Elm Street near Sumter Avenue (Quinnell 1978: 9). In 1912 president Woodrow Wilson made Oklahoma a state; all but one county now belonged within Indian Territory east of Wichita Falls (Oklahoma Historical Society Museum online database) . The name proposed for the new state was Land run by White Men but due to objections from Native American leaders it was changed to Oklahoma Statehood on November 3rd 1917 with James Hance as its first governor On October 6th 1937 the last major flood event in history occurred when Creek Nation Lake burst its banks destroying homes and crops along both sides of RT 13 just south off US 94 near McAlester Okla., killing 36 people including 4 children age 8 months old named Florence McClendon Roemerich et al among other losses (National Geographic Press Archives Online via Google Earth) . These floods also destroyed much property north ridge road between Hartford Rd./US 84 junction east OKC oklaabout 25 miles long bridges across creek destroyed many homesboats engines used here since ago 1700s not anymore
