Navy gift history in Steubenville, Ohio began with the USS Constitution. This ship was donated to the city of Steubenville by Admiral David Dixon Porter on October 6, 1884. The USS Constitution served as a vessel for school and community projects until it was donated to the Navy in 1938. The navy used the USS Constitution for training during World War II and then sold it to Steubenville Municipal Utility District on December 12, 1946. In 1956, the utility district renamed the ship USS Stevens after local son Bob Stevens who had been killed in Korea. On July 25, 1978, the city of Steubenville dedicated an outdoor amphitheater at its square called “The Stevenses” in honor of these events. The amphitheater is still in use today and is home to concerts and other events.

Founded on what is now State Route 6 northwest of downtown Steubenville, the first post office in Steubenville was opened in 1821. The town took its name from General George Washington's unit of brigade veterans who fought at Princeton during the Revolutionary War. Steubenville became an incorporated village on March 10, 1865, when it had a total population of 350 residents. The village ceased to exist on December 31, 1975 when it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights into one large citywide community known today as Cincinnati

The first occupants of Steubenville were two families from New York who arrived in 1800 looking for new land to settle after their father's death. They named their new settlement after General George Washington and his forces that had fought in the American Revolution. In 1827, John Dickey bought all of Steubenville from the Hallidays for $3 per acre. It wasn't until 1830 that he started making real progress building roads and schools within the small community. Dickey was an important figure in STEUBENVILLE'S growth as he helped to develop farming practices which gave rise to today's corn culture; agriculture remains one of STEUBENVILLE'S mainstay industries today! ThroughoutSTEUBENVILLE’s history there have been various challenges faced by residents including racism which led to discrimination against black people; however, through education and activism these challenges have been addressed. For example, during World War II STEUBENVILLE became one of America’s most active military communities helping Unites States troops fight in Europe; later on STEUBENVILLE became known as “the quiet city” because of its lack of crime rates despite having some of America’s most robust downtown cores!
