Rocky River is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located in the Black Valley, near the confluence of the Scioto and Rocky Rivers. The population was 1,419 at the 2010 census. The name "Rocky River" first appeared on maps in 1796 as Raccoon Run, given to a stream by General John Forbes during his campaign for President of the United States. The earliest mention of Rocky River as an incorporated town occurred in 1814 when it was placed under the jurisdiction of Mercer County. In 1825, it became part of Perry Township and later Racine Township before becoming a village in 1881. Rocky River had its start as a farming community with several hundred residents and two stores established around 1830. By 1840, there were ten families living here and over fifty businesses were active including three mills, four grocery stores, one tannery and six churches (one Lutheran). A post office was established at Rocky river in 1841, but no mail reached this community until 1865 when railroad service arrived via Sandusky Bayou from Toledo. By 1860, most present day Rocky River residents had moved away from their original farming communities because of advances in transportation which made shipping goods by boat or rail much more efficient than previous methods such as walking or riding horses to get goods to market. Although many early settlers returned to live here after leaving for other parts of Ohio or Kentucky due to changes occurring within those states during that time period; most settled down permanently in what is now RockyRiver proper along with adjacent farmlands today.

The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, was founded in 1775 and soon began receiving donations of clothing, blankets, shoes and other supplies from soldiers stationed in the colonies. In 1802, President George Washington presented his ceremonial sword to Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet, a Confederate soldier who had fought for the United States during the American Revolution. In 1861, when Virginia seceded from the Union and formed its own country called secessionist Alabama, Longstreet donated his sword to that state's military arm called the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. During World War II (1939-1945), General Dwight D. Eisenhower sent over 1 million items to servicemen stationed overseas including rifles, artillery shells and tires for their cars. In 1951, Admiral Chester Nimitz gave a donation of 20 aircraft carriers worth $2 million dollars to charity.
Rocky River is a small town in Butler County, Ohio, located on the east bank of the Rocky River. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Dayville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Rocky River originates from the Shawnee word "chariot" which means "roundabout." In 1812, a group of Shawnees and other Native Americans who had been living in what is now Butler County discovered coal seams underlying land that they had never before seen. They began mining this coal and selling it to early settlers in nearby Steubenville. By 1816, Rocky River had become known as one of the leading coal markets in the area. In 1792, James Kieft purchased 4 acres (1 km²) along with three others in what is now Rocky River Township from Nicholas Weickerbach for $2 per acre ($/ha). This land became Kieftown on July 12, 1792. Because it lay within present day Butler and Warren counties at that time, it was included within newly formed Franklin Township on November 15 of that year under a new commission form of government called an "advisory board." During its early years as a township, Rocky River developed around two schools –one for boys and one for girls – as well as a chapel and storehouse. A gristmill was built about 1800 by John Dickson; but it did not operate until 1830 when it was bought by Isaiah Carpenter Sr., who operated it until his death in 1840. The first post office at Rocky River was established on October 10, 1817 by Samuel Morse with initial mail delivery taking place from Steubenville to Parkersburg four times each week using wagons drawn by four horses each time. The first settler to reside permanently in RockyRiver was Solomon Sherer who arrived there circa 1796 after being granted land near Portsmouth by General Washington during his visit to Great Britain that summer). He erected a dwelling house upon his arrival which he named Sherer's Ferry after shipbuilding pioneer David Dixon whose ferry service transported goods between Portsmouth and Lancaster over the Bedford river system - later renamed Delaware Bayou following its change from tidal to non-tidal water status following Hurricane Katrina . Although recorded history does not mention him having any children or immediate descendants residing hereabouts subsequent thereto however oral tradition maintains that Solomon Sherer’s grandson Elijah Sherer settled hereabouts circa 1830 with his wife Rebecca (née Green) becoming proprietor thereof some forty five years thence .
