Rocky River is a small town in the Athens, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,928 at the 2010 census. However, since Green Township included only a small portion of today's downtown area - including much of what is now University Circle - it remained an unincorporated community until 1971 when it became part of the newly created Athens-Middletown township. Today's downtown district includes several businesses along Harrison Street from Euclid Avenue south to Vine Street; as well as several housing developments off Holmes Road eastward from I-675/US 361 northward to Kennedy Boulevard/SR 620 westward from US 362 eastward to Old State House Drive NE/SR 625 southward from US 362 northeast from Downtown Athens across SR 620 to Interstate 80 /SR 208 irt his boundaries (this last development also includes some older commercial buildings dating back to before annexation). A total of 2 blocks extending northeast along Harrison Street contain original missionary property purchased by Rome Catholic Church trustees early in this century after which numerous residential buildings replaced outmoded missionary properties within their limits while McKnight Avenue continues serve mainly as vehicular access road or parking lot for surrounding dwellings with efforts currently underway to redevelop most or all areas adjacent thereto and improve public transportation options available immediately adjacent thereto thereby providing jobs and economic opportunities directly adjacent thereto while also reducing potential future impacts associated with incompatible plans previously advanced without local input necessary for review or approval; this redevelopment effort has been spearheaded by Mayor Coleman Young who met annually with various stakeholders throughout entire process
