The Reynoldsburg Army Post office was established in 1841, and served as the town's primary mail service until 1865. The post office was moved to its present location on Main Street in 1881. The Reynoldsburg native, James W. Reynolds, enlisted in the Union army during the American Civil War and served as a sergeant in the 1st Ohio Infantry. He was discharged from service after being invalided home with a broken leg. Reynolds resumed his education and worked as a clerk before becoming an accountant and then president of his own business. In 1881, he married Anna Matson in Greenfield Township and they would have four children. Reynolds died in 1922 at the age of 83 after a long life spent helping others through his businesses and charity work.
Reynoldsburg is a city in Richland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Richland County. Reynoldsburg is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Reynoldsburg were French traders and missionaries in 1795. They named it "Canton" after their general, Marquis de Lafayette, who had visited the area earlier that year. In 1802, James Kempton founded a cattle ranch here and named it after him. A post office was established in 1805 and remained in operation until 1918. In 1830, John Reynolds moved his family from Lexington Township to start a new life here on the Scioto Riverbank opposite what is now downtown Reynoldsburg. He called his place "Ridgecrest." The townspeople selected this name because of its height above water (43 feet above mean sea level). This high point also made for good land for farming because nearby hillsides were too swampy or steep for cultivation. The first courthouse in town was erected in 1840 on State Street between Third and Fourth Streets; it served as court house until 1862 when it burned down and was replaced by a more recent structure on High Street near Fourth Street in 1875-76-77-78-79-80-81-(82?). This building became known as the old jail which still stands today behind First Baptist Church off High Street next to PNC Banknorth America Arena (formerly OmniCare Arena). Railroad construction began here in 1856 and by 1860 miles of track had been built through this part of Ohio with trains passing through town twice daily carrying passengers and cargo east to Cleveland or west to Cincinnati or Indianapolis. Local mills started operations early while commercial fishermen stopped fishing altogether due to lack of access to navigable waters upstream (rivers being then only about 3/4ths full at low tide). By 1870 there were over 50 businesses operating within one mile of downtown Reynoldsburg with 300 residents living within that radius! It wasn’t until 1907 that an electric light system went into service which helped make downtown Reynoldsburg more visible during daylight hours; prior to that people used kerosene lamps which quickly gave out!
