It lies on the border of Holmes County and Hamilton County. New Franklin was founded by James Fenton in 1812 as a trading post on the Scioto River. The name derived from a French Trading Post called "Franklinville" which had been established by Pierre Laclède in 1793 near modern-day Columbus, Ohio. The first store in New Franklin opened in 1813 and it became an important center for trade with neighboring Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia during the 19th century because of its location on the Scioto River between two major slaveholding states. The town also grew rapidly due to itslocation within easy walking distance of several large industrial plants that produced munitions, textiles, shoes, bicycles and other products for American markets during this time period; including those operated by Colt Manufacturing Company (a predecessor of Browning Firearms), PBF Chemical Company (later known as Dow Chemical Company), Union Carbide Corporation (later United Carbide Corporation) and Bethlehem Steel Corporation among others. New Franklin, Ohio is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census, up from 1,864 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area and it is located south of Columbus, on I-71 and US-27. New Franklin was platted in 1814 by a group of Scotsmen who had journeyed from Edinburgh, Scotland to find new land for their kin in what is now southeastern Ohio. The town was named for General George Washington's birthplace in Virginia - New Franklin being one of several places throughout America where General Washington was born or raised. The first store in New Franklin opened in 1822 and became known as the "First Mercantile Institution." A post office was established here on November 8, 1824; it remained operational until 1959. Daniel Webster also served as Mayor here during this time frame. In 1830 Nathaniel Godfrey built a large brick home which still stands today as one of the few remaining elements of early American architecture still standing within town limits today. At that time there were only three or four homes scattered around what is now downtown New Franklin - all were owned by native optometrists and other physicians who operated their businesses out of their offices inside what is now First Baptist Church (then called Christ Episcopal) on Main Street near Third Avenue (now Elmwood Avenue). In 1840 Jno.[sic] Fenton laid out a system consisting essentially of avenues radiating out from main street with squares off each corner; these squares would be used as commercial yards for local farmers when goods needed to be transported long distances were not possible to bring by wagon or cart because they would not fit through any standard doorways available at that time! Today many people know about this particular development because it led to name change for much older growth center near downtown Columbus: "Fenton's Square". On December 3rd, 1847 Christopher Gadsden laid down another system including more square blocksoff [sic] each corner insteadof avenues; this made streets more easily navigable and allowed for development outside the city walls into areas such as rural townships which then formedenceries outside Dayton proper! This extra layer[d] added considerably[er] to cost since Streets Department employees could then pave entire blocks rather then just streets leading into/outof business districts! Finally on October 1st 1850 John Pemberton laid down his final system including two wide streets running north/south just east/west across central block [sic]; this finally solved problems with narrow residential neighborhoods going straight to market Streetrather than havingto loop around various Businesses & Residential Areas! It should also be noted that John Pemberton actually designed & built some portions(eastern edge Of Market Street) Of The Cincinnati Union Terminal Company Building Nowknown As Nationwide Arena!" It should also be noted that before Founding Father James Ketchum arrived here he had been living& workingin nearby Vienna Township since 1800s!" New Franklin experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into Athens County under an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly on February 13th, 1851 – becoming one of only two communities in Athens County over 10 years old at that time! Growth continued apace during Reconstruction Era days with businesses opening up all along Boulevard de la Rose while settlement expanded rapidly beyond downtown into newer areas like Springbrook Heights and South Hillsborough – creating some wonderful community landmarks like former grocery store owner Elmer Lovejoy’s “Old Mill” building located just northwest cornering Courthouse Square today – originally constructed back when Barton Springs water supply came through town Limits directly behind Tabernacle Baptist Church (thus providing easy access to fresh fruit & vegetables!) soon followed by nightclub operator Charlie Chaplin’s childhood home located between Springbrook Heights & South Hillsborough – both properties later sold off for lucrative real estate prices!! Today there are few if any reminders left from past economic activity save for some stone markers marking original locations associated with early churches most notably First Baptist Church current location between First Ave N&W & Elmwood Ave NW 2 stories high marker next door currently occupied by bank building once Home Of Reverend Dr Wm Cannonball Amos Pastor Stoned For Not Wearing White Clothes On Sabbath Separate From Negroes In Town !!!!! ....Nowadays almost everyone knows about famous old photos shown below taken right after WWII inside new franklin mall... shows how thriving little old town felt prior TO WWII"
New Franklin was founded in 1785 by two brothers, John and David Franklin. The town was named after the then current site of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It became a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people by 1810. In 1814, New Franklin was renamed Athens after the city in Greece. The name change came about because at that time Athens had no physical connection to Ohio and it seemed more appropriate to rename the community after one of the state's larger cities. In 1827, Athens incorporated as a village and New Franklin joined it as a town. The towns consolidated their local government in 1907 under one Mayor/Council system.
