In 1814, New Franklin was renamed Dayton after General James H. Dayton, who played a significant role in ending Indian Wars in central Ohio and making Dayton one of the principal settlements on the new United States frontier. The town experienced prosperity during its early years, thanks to its location at the junction of two important Trails: One connected Cincinnati with Pittsburgh via Pennsylvania Avenue; and another led from Springfield through Newark to Detroit. However, these days New Franklin is little more than a footnote in Ohio history books – most visitors know it only for its place nameakes like Dayton Airport and NewFranklin Library! In fact, much of what we know about New Franklin comes from historical documents collected by local historian John Sutherlin during his research for his book “New Franklin: A History” (published in 1978). Many fascinating aspects of this small town’s past have been omitted from other sources because they would not be relevant to our story today. For example, few outsiders ever visited New Franklin until after it became part of Uniontown Township - which happened around 1830! Nonetheless, Sutherlin has pieced together an interesting bit about life back then that may surprise you – including some surprising insights into how some people managed to survive on such limited resources during America’s first great struggle for independence! New Franklin was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Garris and his brother John. The land for the town was donated by Simon Kirker, who had been granted a tract of land east of the Great Miami River by the French. New Franklin was named after Nicholas Garris and John Kirker, both of whom were natives of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The first settler in New Franklin was David Welsh, who built a cabin on the present site of Trumbull Square. In 1811, Isaac Hine purchased two acres of land near where Trumbull Square is now located from Welsh and laid out a street grid system for the town. By 1830, New Franklin had a population of fifty-six residents. The first school in New Franklin was established in 1827 and operated as an academy until 1830 when it became an elementary school. In 1834, General James Kuykendall donated three acres to be used as a city square within the limits of New Franklin. The square served as the center for social events and entertainment until 1840 when it became known as Trumbull Square Park
