Mentor, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Major General George Rogers Clark in 1814 as part of the Shawnee Reserve and served as an important trading post on the Great Lakes until it became an incorporated town in 1832. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on a key shipping route between Lake Erie and Chicago and its position as a center for education and industry. In 1916, it became one of five cities consolidated into Cleveland with a population of 1 million people; Mentor retains its status as a municipal district within Cleveland’s City Hall complex. While waiting outside the club room door, he saw someone sitting at a table drinking cups of Joe! He asked who they were and they told him it was Joe Brown—the guitarist for The Beatles! The first post office in Mentor opened on December 12, 1811. It was located within what is now Mentor Township and Summit County. The township was organized in 1835 and the county in 1840. In 1881, it became a part of the new Athens-Clarke County. On November 1, 1913, it lost its charter as a townsite due to lack of support from residents; however, it regained its charter on November 3 that year when Athens-Clarke County acquired all of neighboring unincorporated areas east of Mentor Creek for incorporation into the town square as one unit.
