In the early 1800s, Massillon was a small community in central Ohio. The town was founded by farmers who arrived from Germany in the mid-1700s. By 1810, Massillon had a population of about 100 people. The town became an agricultural center and production of coffee began. In 1837, John Morse bought land in Massillon and started to grow coffee beans. In 1849, Morse merged with two other farms to form the present-day company that still produces artisan coffee today. The first espresso machines were made inMassillon by Angelo Moro and Giovanni della Valle in 1840. This type of machine used hot water and grounds to make espresso drinks. Coffee beans were roasted on site by Moro and his assistants until 1865 when machines were introduced that could be taken apart and cleaned. From 1865 until 1971, the company produced three types of espresso machines: manual (those with keys), electric (with lights), and pneumatically operated (using gas). The first automatic espresso machines were developed at the company in 1971 by Giovanni della Valle as part of a project called "Pistone Bianche" or White Towers. These machines used steam pressure instead of hot water to make espresso drinks. After this machine's release, automated systems became more common across Italian companies followed by American companies such as La Citta del Caffe Nero in 1984 which introduced milk frothing for their Italian blends before it was available nationwide on most Starbucks stores starting in 2006). The business continued to grow until 1926 when it merged with another coffee shop, The Gilded Cage, to form The Gilded Cage Coffee Company. In 1928, the company changed its name to The Herald Coffee Company.

The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. The first Massillon settlers were from England and Wales. They arrived in 1788 and founded the town on the site of an old millrace that flows through the community. The name "Massillon" was chosen to honor General George Washington's victory over the British at Yorktown in 1781. Since its founding, Massillon has been a center for industry and commerce. In 1819, it became one of the original ten Towns into which Ohio was divided as part of President James K. Polk's Great Union Plan. The town developed a large manufacturing sector that included shipbuilding, printing, chemicals, meatpacking and other agricultural products. I n 1924-1925, Massillon created what is now known as "the Town Square." This square contains three blocks of downtown business streets and landmark buildings such as the former Ohio State Capitol building (now used as an art museum) and Bank One Tower (now occupied by PNC Financial Services). Today's City Hall complex occupies most of one side of this square; while portions of North Main Street (formerly Third Street), South Third Street (formerly Second Street), West Market Street (formerly First Street) still stand within city limits today as part of government services district boundaries established by order dated November 13th 1959., After World War II growth slowed but did not stop until current levels began to grow again following economic liberalization beginning with deregulations unleashed by Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton during their administrations..massillonohio4

In 1834, the Village of Massillon merged with the Township of Bellefontaine to form the new Town of Massillon under a charter from Governor Andrew Johnson. The original name for the borough that formed around it (Bellefontaine) may have been inspired by General John Beckwith's home near Bellefontaine Manor in Wayne County (now part of Miamisburg). The town has seen many changes throughout its history; some dating back to its incorporation date (1802), while others more recent include becoming one of the largest steel production areas in North America during World War II and later becoming known for its agricultural products such as cornbread and potatoes
