The first coffeehouses in Marietta were called the Coffee House and the Globe. The Coffee House was opened in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The Globe was opened in 1802 by James Weldon Johnson. They both closed in 1805 because of competition from a new store, the Mercantile Exchange. In 1810, John Claflin started the Claflin's Coffee House on Clinton Street. It continued to be open until 1830 when it burned down. In 1837, Elijah Hicks founded Hicks' Coffee House on High Street. It continued to be open until 1902 when it burned down again.
Marietta, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,553. The town was named for Virginia Marietta and founded by Methodists in 1811. It is considered part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Marietta was James Cook who arrived in 1811 and platted what is now Marietta Township on December 15, 1811. Cook's plat included land that would eventually become current-day Butler County. In 1818 John Sibley settled near present-day Marietta and built a cabin on the west side of Minerva Creek. He also hunted game in what is now Butler County while living near his cabin. On October 12, 1821 James Higbee purchased two hundred acres (81 hectares) of land from Nicholas King at $5 per acre ($96 today). Higbee later moved to this location and raised corn, wheat,orge apples and other crops until he sold his property to David Dabney on January 4, 1830 for $10 per acre ($248 today). He named his new tract "Dabney's Mill" after himself and it remained undeveloped until 1840 when Daniel Dabney donated one million dollars (then worth about $1 million) toward development of what would become known as "Marietta Township." One important early resident of Marietta were two physicians: Drs Samuel Morse and Levi Coffin; both men came to America during the American Revolution with their families as refugees from Great Britain. Drs Morse and Coffin established a practice in nearby Middletown before moving to Marietta where they continued their medical practices until their deaths in 1865 and 1865 respectively. In addition to practicing medicine they also developed an interest in agricultural pursuits which led them to map out a mill site on Minerva Creek opposite their home which became known as "Dabney's Mill." Today portions of this mill still stand within the limits of modern day Mariettta Township along Minerva Creek just north of I-75 exit 232B/R

In 1803, the town of Marietta was founded by David Wilkinson and his wife Elizabeth. The first settler in Marietta was James Wilkinson. In 1811, the town became a part of the United States. In 1815, the town had a population of seventy-five people and it was platted as a village. On December 5, 1830, Marietta's incorporation as an independent township was ratified by Congress. On November 15, 1840, Marietta became a city after it passed a referendum on its own proposition. On February 14, 1871, City Hall burned down and caused $1 million in damage to the building which still stands today as part of the municipal library system
