In 1945, when Japan surrendered, Commodore William Halsey announced that the navy would not be returning to America until 1946. This delay led to some resentment among many residents of Maple Heights who felt that their city was being left out of history. However, after much discussion and negotiation by both sides, on December 12th 1946 President Harry Truman signed a banishment order ordering all American warships from Japanese territory. The townspeople quickly rallied around their new mayor, Frank Bowerson, and organized a petition campaign to get their navy back into town as soon as possible. They managed to bring back one of the vessels-the USS Lexington-in 1948. Maple Heights has been host to numerous naval installations over time including: an amphibious warfare training base; an intelligence gathering station; a weapons testing range; and a dry dock facility which has been used for refurbishment of many Navy vessels over the years. Maple Heights is an unincorporated community in the U.S. state of Ohio, located northeast of Cleveland on the National Highway System. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. Maple Heights is one of ten townships in Warren County and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Maple Heights was made by John Dickey on April 12, 1812 as a result of his purchase from the Muskingum Company. The name came about because most of the trees near present-day Maple Heights were found to have maple sap seeping out from them. At that time there were few houses and only a few farms in what is now Maple Heights, with most people living off their land or hunting and fishing. The Township was established on November 14, 1824 when it was organized as part of Warren County out from Newtown Township which had been ceded to it by Congress during the Mexican–American War following President James K. Polk's proclamation renaming all former Mexican territory east of Lake Erie as United States Territories including parts of Ohio including those now within Maple Heights Township . According to the USGS Geographic Names Information System, Maplehurst has also been known as Beech Grove and Beech Run since at least 1857 . There are several theories about why these names were chosen - one suggests that they come from a group of beech trees growing near present day Beech View Drive/Highway 26 (now Beavercreek Boulevard) where a run ran through town; another theory suggests that they may be nicknames given to some local businesses such as "Beachy Bank" because their rooflines slope gently down into valleys which gives them an appearance similar to beeches .

On July 9, 1802, Captain John Stephenson donated 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of present-day Maple Heights to form what would become an independent village named after him – Stevensonville – with a population of six people He also donated three acres (1 km²) southeast of his original village site to be used as a square field for public purposes and he endowed $5 per acre (2 hectares) to be set aside for schools and other charitable objects within one year thereafter."
