MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Stark County. Maple Heights was founded in 1824 by John Maple and his wife Deborah as a log settlement on an outcropping of high ground east of what is now Cleveland. The first store opened in 1829 and the first post office in 1830. In 1840, Maple Heights became the county seat for Stark County and its name changed to Maple Heights after its incorporation into the state of Ohio. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location near Cleveland and other manufacturing centers in southwestern Ohio. By 1870, it had a school, church, Masonic Lodge No. 3 (later dissolved), four stores and ninety-two homes. The maple syrup industry played a significant role in Maple Heights' development; Resident George Crampin set up a corn syrup factory there in 1873. By 1902, maple sugar production had become so important that one-third of all total agricultural production in Stark County came from maple trees – more than any other tree species! During World War II, much of the housing stock being built for war workers in southeastern Ohio were constructed within two miles of Maple Heights; many residents worked on military installations nearby such as Fort Sill (Oklahoma) or Windy Hill (New Bern). After America's entry into World War II, demand for goods produced by war workers led to increased economic activity withinMaple Heights itself; several businesses downtown continued operation until they closed during the late 20th century due to either declining sales or competition from larger towns throughout northeastern Ohio. In recent years however, some businesses have reopened including: A & J Liquor Store (since 1984), Diner Den (since 1988), Waffle House (since 2002), Starbucks Coffee House (opened 2007) Today's economy relies heavily upon transportation services; most citizens use public transportation which includes buses operated by Metro Transit Company located just north of town off I-675 between Cleveland and Akron - making it easy to get around without having to leave town center
Maple Heights was originally named after the maple tree that grow in the town. The name change took place because of a tax controversy at the time.
