The area that now includes Lima and portions of Canton was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century. In 1813, it became part of what is now Delaware County, Ohio as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1821, it became a county within what is now Stark County, Ohio. In 1827, it was made a town when parts of Stark and Medina counties were combined to form its new county. A post office called Lima was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1951.
