The Coast Guard has been in Lima, Ohio since 1916. The first year that the Coast Guard was stationed here, they were called the “Lima Patrol.” In 1917, the Coast Guard was renamed as the “Lima Beach Patrol.” The name changed again in 1922 to the “Lima Harbor Patrol.” The patrol service was given its current name of the Coast Guard in 1976. In 1916, a group of friends from Lima pooled their money and bought a small boat called a ladderboat which they used for patrols on the local waterways. This waterway included parts of today's downtown area as well as many other smaller lakes and rivers. In 1924, when it became clear that ocean shipping was becoming more important in Inter-American trade than land smuggling, the Lima Beach Patrol increased its patrols to include coastal waters between Cuyahoga and Lake Erie coasts. In 1936-1937, both branches of the Coast Guard collaborated to form one unit under instructions from Assistant Commandant JF Brownell who said: "It is our intention that this type of cooperation will be continued until every possible means can be obtained by each branch to furnish mutual assistance where required." The Lima Harbor Patrol enjoyed some success during World War II while other units were busy fighting in Europe or Asia; however, no major incidents occurred because of their work during wartime times! On 7 October 1976 Commander John P Waddington presented his compliments to Rear Admiral James A Jackson on behalf of all members of the coast guard for performing so successfully at SEA FESTIVAL - an event which took place at NAS Whidbey Island (WA) Airport on Saturday 9 October 1976 auxillary personnel from USCG division 5 Washington state including member MC1(G), Master Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Rene Svedberg with helicopters providing cover for helicopter carriers USS Constitution (CVN 74) Commodore Ronald L Kapp (USCG)(Retd.) and USS Watergate (WT 59). Lima, Ohio is a small town located in the Mentor-Aurora area of Northwest Ohio. The town was founded in 1812 by means of an act of the United States Congress, and named for Lima, Peru. The first post office in Lima was established on November 5, 1814. As of the 2010 census, Lima had a population of 1684. The first white settlers in Lima were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived from Maryland in 1815. They built a cabin on Tilton Creek and started a farm that stretched from what is now downtown to what is now State Road 3. In 1819 they married Martha Coffin Goodloe and started another farm east of their original property where they still live today. Two years later they moved their entire household to what is now downtown when President James Kieft granted them land at the corner of High Street and Third Avenue for $1000USD which included all future limits on their territory as well as access to water supplies found within walking distance. In 1824 John Prentice came to Lima with his family from Meigs County, Kentucky. He purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) north of present day State Road 3 from Levi Coffin for $100USD which included most of what is now downtown between High Street and Walnut Street. He began developing this land into a farming community with homes, shops, churches, schools and other infrastructure necessary for cultivating crops such as corn, beans etc., while also establishing himself as one of the early leaders in this region during its early days when there were no roads or telephone services available anywhere near him! One important reason why Lima grew rapidly during its early years was because it was accessible by horseback or wagon only through short trips down Tilton Creek or up State Road 3 – both very difficult journeys given how far away everything was! By 1830 he had built a mill on higher ground northwest of present day Elmira Plaza just east of Main Street between High Street and Second Avenue so that he could produce flour commercially without having to go down Tilton Creek! This became an invaluable asset not only because it allowed him to sell flour direct to consumers but also helped stimulate growth throughout much Northwestern Ohio due to increased demand following the Panic Of 1830 which struck America hard indeed! An even more substantial boost however came about throughestablishing credit unions – something unheardof back then – which made obtaining goods and services much easier than ever before since everyone could easily get hold of cash instead! Lima quickly developed into one OF THE LARGEST BUSINESS COMMUNITIES IN NORTHERN OHIO AND ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING!!!! In fact many people say that if you want TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY – LIMA IS A MUST SEE!!!!
Lima was founded by a group of traders in the late 1700s. The town was originally called Xenia, but it changed its name to Lima because of the Lengthy War for Independence from Great Britain. The city's first mayor, Lorenzo de Zaldivar, was born in Lima and served in that position from 1800 to 1805. In 1812, President John Quincy Adams appointed Lima's first postmaster general. In 1821, the city became the capital of Ohio Territory after Ohio had become a state. In 1827, Peru resigned as president of Mexico and made an agreement with the United States recognizing American independence and creating new states east of the Mississippi River. By 1830, there were over 1,000 people living in Lima.[1] In 1850, when Ohio became a state, Lima lost its status as its capital and merged with other nearby towns to form what is now Sandusky County. The growth of trade and industry during this time led to docks becoming available for shipping on the Scioto River which helped create many jobs in colonial times. Many historical sites are located within or near downtown Lima including: The State Capitol (now part of University Park),the old jail (now used as a museum),the old courthouse (renowned for having been built without any money from public coffers),the former factory where zinc was once produced (now a restaurant), Lloyd House Museum (dedicated to history education about early Ohios' development) and much more!
