The academy eventually became an all-male institution, and its first cadet class was composed of soldiers from Ohio. Over time, the academy grew into a full-fledged military school, and it has since been home to some of America’s most prestigious units. One of the most famous members of the academy’s Cadet Class is General George Washington himself. After attending the academy for three years, Washington served as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1783, he resigned his commission to return to school at Amherst College and attend sessions of Congress as a student. Upon graduating from Amherst College in 1785, Washington was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and fought against British forces during the war. After his service in the army ended, Washington moved back to Virginia and began studying law under John Jay. He eventually became one of America’s first attorneys general and helped write both The Constitution and The Bill Of Rights. While living in Philadelphia during this time, Washington also developed close relationships with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson – two key figures behind American democracy. Eventually returning to Ironton after taking a brief hiatus from politics, Washington resumed his education at Amherst College where he earned his doctorate degree in 1797. He then returned to Philadelphia as professor of law at University Hall before dying aged 71 years old on February 14th, 1848 – one year shy of his 82nd birthday! Shortly afterwards, he was buried at Mount Airy Cemetery near Philadelphia!

In 1836, Ironton become an incorporated village and it adopted a city charter in 1857. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century as manufacturing businesses moved into its core area from other parts of Ohio. During World War II, Ironton supported both sides of the war effort with significant contributions from its businesses and citizens. This support helped make Ironton one of Toledo’s most active industrial cities during that time period. As recently as 2007, nearly 60% of all jobs in town were held by residents working within their own households rather than outside wage labor).
