Greenville, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Greenville is one of two cities inLucas County (the other being Dayton) and was founded on November 3, 1819 by Captain John Green and his wife Phebe Cushing. The present courthouse building was built between 1886 and 1888 by local contractor James M. Henshaw with funds provided by General David Duncan. The design was based on an existing courthouse in Cincinnati,Ohio which had been destroyed in a fire. The cornerstone for the building was laid on July 5, 1888 by Mayor Jno. Aiken and First Lady Sarah Henshaw; it also included the dedication speech of President George Washington as well as speeches from Governor John Dennison and Congressman Reuben Fenton. In 1902 when Greenville became a city it annexed the unincorporated village of Westwood which sat just outside its boundaries to make room for growth within city limits caused by suburban development around Dayton Airport and other industrial areas near downtown Greenville. In 1957-58 annexation of nearby Addison Township completed the process which divided Greenville into eastern portions – Addison Heights west of Canal Street to the north while centralGreenville remained annexed to western portions – Dexter Avenue south of Canal Street to the east while westof Dexter Avenue lies undeveloped land used today only for pasture purposes (Miller Park). In 1990-91 when Dayton's annexations were complete through township they disbanded all prior municipal governments within their new jurisdictions creating what is now called “West Side” or “Addison Heights” Neighborhood Councils composed entirely of individuals who resided therein before incorporation into any municipality including both those annexed into that municipality during 1990-91 as well as anyone residing within that newly formed City Limits since then (except Miller Park residents who are still park residents). Today there are over 50 communities located within this unincorporated portion or satellite townships surrounding Dayton Airport totaling some 104 square miles with a population density over 1 person per square mile making it one of America's most rural cores urban settings having less than one half percent living in inner city surrounds despite close proximity to major commercial centers like Dayton Airport
