Fremont is a town in the Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1806 by German immigrants and named for General Friedrich Wilhelm von Fremont who had fought with Washington during the American Revolution. In 1830, it became a county seat of Ottawa County after its incorporation from part of Medina Township. The county courthouse was built in 1849 and replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by a fire in 1836. In 1840, Fremont became one of the first municipalities to be organized within Cleveland when it seceded from neighboring Medina Township. Fremont's first school was established in what is now the downtown area and served students until about 1870 when instruction moved to new buildings on Euclid Avenue east of Main Street. A public library opened in 1909 and has been serving residents ever since. The post office at Fremont was discontinued on July 14, 1964; all mail was delivered through Cleveland's main Post Office until that date. The last letter sent through the old post office was "To All Americans" on October 15, 1963 which signaled the end of an era for this small town located just west of downtown Cleveland as well as other small towns throughout Northeast Ohio that depended on horse drawn wagons to send their mail
